In 2013, Frank Mekwunye, who was 32 years old and from Utor Okpo in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State, was traveling from Benin to Lagos with his friends Chinonso and Emmanuel when their bus was stopped at a police checkpoint in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The police officers alleged that the bus was stolen and arrested the driver, Mekwunye, and his friends. The driver and the bus were later released, but Mekwunye and his friends were detained on charges of "armed robbery" as they refused to pay a bribe.
